A Fan of the Great Outdoors

Meet ORA Orthopedic’s Dr. Joseph Martin.

IMG_0054Over the past 20 years, Quad Cities orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin has developed a special interest and expertise in treating the hip and knee. He performs joint replacement and revision surgery of the hip and knee joints, and arthroscopic surgery for knee injuries.

He completed fellowship training in knee and hip reconstruction in Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, England.

Dr. Martin is a team physician for Pleasant Valley High School.

A Closer Look

Hometown:   Chicago, IL (I grew up in Cedar Rapids, IA.)

Favorite Movie:  Lord of the Rings (He admits to being a Tolkien geek since junior high school!)

Favorite Book:  A River Runs Through It (“Every paragraph like poetry – plus there’s fishing!)

Time Well Spent:  ”Being outside with the family all day. Cooking dinner. Catching up on reading.”

Interests:  When not at the office, Dr. Martin enjoys biking, golfing, gardening and cooking. He follows environmental issues.  ”I’m also a Notre Dame and U of Iowa sports fan.”

Who would you like to meet and why?  ”John Muir – writer, conservationist, extreme camper. He walked all over this continent with no equipment. How? Why?”

Where would you like to travel, but never been?  ”India. I love Indian food. It’s a place of otherworldly sights in the land of inexhaustible philosophies.”

What made you decide to become a doctor – and specifically an orthopedic surgeon?  ”How great is it to have a job where you get to help people for a living? Orthopods frequently get to actually ‘fix’ problems.”

What do you like best about practicing medicine? “I like making a difference in a person’s quality of life, allowing them to resume activities they had abandoned because of pain.”

What inspires you most about your patients? “Their willingness to work to get better, while keeping a sense of humor.”

If there is one piece of advice you wish your patients would take to heart, what would it be? “Patient attitude is very important in determining your outcome. Try to be positive and energetic.”
