Great Winter Workout: Spinning Spares Joints, Torches Calories

Most early mornings will find Dr. Bries spinning at the Scott Count Family Y’s Sunrise Spin Class.

On frosty winter days, there’s no better way to kick your diet and fitness into high gear than with spinning!  ORA Orthopedics’ Dr. Andrew Bries is a convert to the sport and says it benefits people of all ages.

For newbies, spinning may look a little intimidating because spinners follow the commands of the class instructor. But Dr. Bries says it’s an easy sport to learn and you set your own pace by controlling your speed and intensity.

We caught up with Dr. Bries at the Scott County Family YMCA, Utica Ridge, for a sunrise spin class. Dr. Bries – who is a Quad-City sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon at ORA Orthopedics – describes a typical spinning workout:

Check out Dr. Bries’ 4 reasons to keep on spinning:

1.    Fat burning cardio: Spinning revs up your metabolism and can be a torch burner for calories. Depending on your weight and intensity, spinning can burn about 400-600 calories in a 40-minute workout.

2.    Low impact: Dr. Bries says spinning protects your hips, knees, feet, and ankles from the jarring impact of sports like jogging.  Spinning is also great for those who suffer from arthritis or other joint pain.

3.    Time-saver: A great spinning workout takes under an hour and it’s easy to fit the exercise into your busy workday.

4.    It’s fun: Spinning combines the motivation of a group workout, a supportive instructor, and energetic, heart-pounding music. “Spinning is a gift you give yourself,” says Dr. Bries.
